MULTIVERSE

MULTIVERSE invites to a fantasy world of light, sounds and matters flowing, spiralling and shaping like gentle giants. As the performance unravels, the ring fills with images of planetary constellations, minerals, elemental-biological ecological beauty and devastation, life and extinction, a universe folding and unfolding in and out of itself —a hypnotic and meditative experience.

Multiverse was created by Marie-Andrée Robitaille as part of Circus as Practices of Hope, a doctoral artistic research project at Stockholm University of the Arts. Multiverse is a solo performance, featuring materials and objects associated with human vulnerability. Central to the work is the space blanket, an aluminum material developed by NASA to send human in outer space. On Earth, the space blanket serves as a safety blanket, used in disaster relief, for displaced people, and in rescue operations during events like earthquakes, or terrorist attach. It is a politically loaded material symbolizing our time—a reminder of humanity’s strength and fragility.

Multiverse is being presented in various formats: a one hour performances including 10 minutes interaction for general audiences, as kinetic and sonic installations, durational work and site-specific adaptations. It has appeared in circus and dance festival, theater venues, museum sand art galleries in  Sweden, Denmark, the UK, Lithuania, and Bogota Colombia in South Americas. Its most spectacular form is experienced in a black box with a 360-degree audience but can adapt to frontal staging and other unique venues.

Multiverse is introduced as as posthuman hopepunk circus fabulation, blending sound, light, and d’object manipulation, theatre d’objet, and a light touch of clowning.

Multiverse imagines the last human on Earth as a circus artist, demonstrating that with care, imagination and a smile at heart, we can rebuild new realities. This performance is dedicated to bringing hope in the dark.

The piece is a playful, hypnotic and meditative experience accessible to all the family from 8 years old.
